BOB HUGHES

FASLA, Founding Partner & Principal

Bob devotes his expertise to re-imagining places across a broad geography and finding effective solutions to complex problems.

With 46 years of experience as a landscape architect and planner, principal and founding partner of HGOR, Bob Hughes is known for his professional and personal contributions to the growth and expansion of Atlanta’s community. His experience working on significant projects, from civic and educational institutions to workplace and community-oriented developments, has allowed HGOR to be recognized with nearly 100 design awards in over thirty-four states and seven countries. Bob’s innate ability to speak the language of his clients has enabled him to build consensus around a comprehensive vision while providing innovative design solutions that are responsive to context, climate, and culture and address critical issues.

Bob’s commitment to the community has garnered multiple awards. In 2022, he received one of the highest honors from the American Society of Landscape Architects, being inducted into the Council of Fellows. He has served on The Piedmont Park Conservancy since 2005 in various roles, including Board Chair overseeing the 45-million-dollar expansion of the park. Bob has also served on the George West Mental Health Foundation’s advisory board for two decades providing pro-bono services that have established an ethos of respect for therapeutic gardens and environmental stewardship best practices. As a board member of Livable Buckhead, he pursues an interest in transit-oriented design; and as a member of Urban Land Institute’s Atlanta chapter exudes his passion for viable urban greenspace.

As a graduate of UGA, Bob is a proponent of fostering future generations of landscape architects and planners. He volunteers as a guest lecturer and instructor at UGA, Georgia Tech, and Clemson University and has been invited to speak at various industry organization engagements as a leading expert in the field of landscape architecture. Bob is the former president of the School of Environment and Design Alumni Association and President of the Dean’s Advisory Council for UGA’s College of Environment and Design. In 2001, he created the “HGOR/Richard Davis Lecture Fund.” He and his wife, Mary, established a Professorship at the College of Environment and Design to retain and recruit top professional landscape architects to train tomorrow’s generation of designers.

Throughout his career, Bob’s thoughtful design approach calls attention to the most distinctive natural attributes of a given place, while his collaborations and community outreach strategies extend the boundaries of traditional landscape architecture. He attributes his dedication to investing in professional and personal growth and understanding that communication is community-driven to his success and happiness.
