Chattahoochee Nature Center

Chattahoochee Nature Center

In line with the Chattahoochee Nature Center’s (CNC) strategic masterplan, HGOR designed a renovation to the most ecologically sensitive portion of the 127-acre site. The design improved pedestrian safety and connectivity from the campus core to the banks of the Chattahoochee through the implementation of an entrance plaza, pedestrian bridge and a half mile of elevated boardwalks.

The site design was intentional to provide an organic and sinewy flow that would be sensitive to existing tree canopy and allow visitors an ADA accessible route to a diversity of unique ecological experiences ranging from the forest canopy, understory, wetlands, floodplain, and riverbank. HGOR’s design also integrated an ADA-accessible canoe launch, allowing all users full and universal access to the river. Interpretive signage was provided at key nodes, where larger gathering areas on the boardwalk also allowed teaching opportunities.

A small viewing pavilion was situated at a key overlook point on the river, providing a sheltered respite. Before implementation, a proposed boardwalk layout design was studied to minimize the grading impact of the wetland environment to reduce the disturbance of existing trees and shrubs. Additionally, the boardwalk and bridge elements were designed to be maintenance-free and visually unobtrusive to the natural environment. Lighting was integrated into the boardwalk structure to allow users to engage in the environment in the evening. Appropriate native plants were woven through the wetlands site to enhance the experience and blend with the natural environment. Stormwater mitigation measures, including permeable pavers placed within the existing parking and a newly installed rain garden, create learning opportunities for visitors to observe green infrastructure.

DESIGN PROCESS

Capitalizing on the health benefits of nature was at the forefront of the CNC master plan.
To accommodate individuals of all ability levels, allowing them complete access to the magic of the Chattahoochee Nature Center and all that being immersed in nature can do to promote physical and mental health, the design plan incorporated an ADA-accessible canoe and kayak launch. By integrating a transfer bench, overhead grab bar and retractable launch ramp for varying water levels, over 1,000 visitors have been able to enjoy the Chattahoochee River via canoe or kayak since the Center’s renovations have been complete.

The site plan was designed to minimize impact on the sensitive environment while providing components such as an expanded ADA-compliant boardwalk and pedestrian bridge, which allow visitors to safely travel from the CNC to the river boardwalk and Chattahoochee River in addition to providing a visual signal of the Center.

Further strategic decisions made during the design process include the integration of safety measures: 4’ x 4’ bumper rails and handrails, wire mesh on handrails, low-voltage lighting on the bridge, ramps and boardwalk, and 625 helical steel piers driven into rock with an average depth of 29 feet below ground surface to support the boardwalk.

CELEBRATING PROJECT SUCCESS
With a long-term sustainability objective as a top priority, exciting new interactive educational programs and recreational activities, such as guided tours, river adventures and youth programming were made possible by HGOR’s creative designs. Such enhancements have solidified CNC’s mission to restore the land, provide options for the community to enjoy nature and present opportunities for visitors to explore the area’s wildlife. Since the completion of the boardwalk and bridge and additional Center enhancements, the Chattahoochee Nature Center has seen 50% growth in membership.
