Mercedes-Benz Stadium

Mercedes-Benz Stadium

Mercedes-Benz Stadium, an iconic sports facility, was designed to support its 71,000 spectators capacity and connect key destinations downtown while aiming to achieve long-term viability through green infrastructure methods and sustainability programming. Arthur Blank’s vision for the stadium was to create a world-class venue that would deliver remarkable transformation throughout downtown Atlanta, which ranks No. 5 across the U.S. for new hotel construction and No. 4 in the Top 10 Cities List for Tourism. Further, a priority was to position the city as a constant consideration for attracting the world’s most significant sports and entertainment events.

HGOR played a pivotal role in bringing this vision to life by transforming the stadium’s exterior, including weaving interesting visual changes throughout the landscape, making the site’s public spaces more welcoming for more than 11 million downtown visitors. Planning and design initiatives prompted walkability, enabling meaningful connections to adjacent neighborhoods, thus helping to spark economic vitality.

Strategic approaches supported the client’s mission of achieving excellence and sustainability. HGOR’s design efforts span the entire site, including the landscape material selection and collaborative efforts on stormwater management and irrigation, contributing to the stadium receiving all water-related credits as part of the LEED Platinum status, allowing for the stadium’s use of recycled water where appropriate. The exterior of Mercedes-Benz Stadium contains a 2.1 million gallon stormwater management system comprising bioswales, a 680,000-gallon cistern, and a 1.1 million-gallon underground stormwater vault, designed to capture and release stormwater, helping prevent flooding in neighboring communities.

Innovation and collaboration on this project allowed Mercedes-Benz Stadium to become the first professional sports stadium to be TRUE certified at a Platinum level.
